Sometimes it’s just hard to find good music these days. Sometimes I don’t want personal lyrics and contrived chord progressions. Sometimes I just want to nod my head and vibe on some serious musicianship.
Lettuce’s Rage! show that funk and soul music did not die with James Brown. The seven-piece band blends 70’s wah with blistering horns and percussion to create solid grooves that become more about the sum of the song than each player’s skill. Nearly all of the songs are instrumentals but the appearance of Dwele on the Curtis Mayfield jam and Kanye West sampled “Move On Up” is a welcomed change of pace. While Lettuce serves as an occasional outlet for its members who are all involved with other bands or projects, it is clear that when the cats get together to rage, the result is funky and refreshing.
