Here we go, night two. Two hours tonight. Not sure I’m ready for this. Maybe a few less posts with more bulk.
8:03 p.m. – Thank you. The Randy montage was perfect. He was arguably the worst judge this year. What did he really bring to the judges table this year besides bad style and out of touch references?
8:06 p.m. – Note to Adam and Kris: You wear white AFTER Memorial Day. Oh, guess the whole cast didn’t get the memo either.
8:11 p.m. – Jenn: “That just sounded like a version you’d hear on Kidz Bop!” Agreed. Sorry Pink.
8:17 p.m. – Was there any doubt the David Cook ballad would explode into a rock outro? Very sad about David’s brother though. It’s a shame Idol exploited his sickness last year. You’d think they’d learn but instead went the same route with Danny this year.
8:26 p.m. – I like Nick Mitchell. His act grows old quick but it was a pretty good sell at first. Totally shined in his moment.
8:28 p.m. – Queen Latifah still sings? “Cue the Rain” has to be the weirdest hook ever. The first of many forced and awkard duets.
8:37 p.m. – Did we really need to hear that Jason Mraz song sung again by the Idols?
8:50 p.m. – Black Eyed Peas medley: Will.i.am. gumby hair. Megan’s awesome isle dancing. Technical glitch. Fergie’s wolverine claws. Two Fergie singles “Glamourous” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry?” So if the girls get BEP who do the guys get?
8:53p.m. – …And bikini girl got impalnts. Great dig by Ryan. Ewwww…Kara is singing! Why? You are not an artist. You can sing but this just feels awkward. Please toot you’re horn some more. Kara’s bikini reveal at the end was somewhat humorous, even if it really was “for charity.” But the best part of what just happened: Bikini Girl n the background trying to match runs during Kara’s big note. I wish I was recording that. YouTube video is necessary tomorrow.
9:02 p.m. – I love “Time After Time” but you cannot perform this song acoustic Cyndi! What was that Indian pow-wow chant at the end? I understand that you may want try to reinvent the song after 25 years but come on, that laps steel was rediculous.
9:08 p.m. – Jenn on Danny and Lionel Ritchie: “This is a great song for two men to duet on.” Is Lionel the go-to middle of the road classy performer at the number one spot in Idol Producer’s rolodex?
9:20 p.m. – Oh, now Adam’s insane wardrobe makes sense. Its Kiss! So Adam gets to rock with Kiss and Kris gets Keith Urban…I think we know who’s winning.
9:28 p.m. – Santana may be the most f’d out dude in music. First he was underated, then he had second life with Supernatural making him overrated and now he’s just a bad medly on Idol. Coming to Vegas soon! Are there really no other CURRENT acts that can be booked for the finale?
9:32 p.m. – It’s great seeing Megan again but this Steve Martain performance is odd. Sure he released an album but how much do you think he had to pay to get on the stage? Is Fox releasing The Pink Panther 7?
9:41 p.m. – Ros Stewart? Really? Safe, middle-of-the-road rock. There’s only so many times I can hear “Black Magic Woman” and “Maggie Mae” in the span on an hour. It’s like I’m tuned into Oldies 103. I guess Black Eyed Peas is as edgy as Fox gets tonight.
9:48 p.m. – Sorry, Idol but that contrived Tatiana bit just fell on it’s face. Neither funny nor clever.
9:53 p.m. – FINALLY ADAM WITH QUEEN!
10:06 p.m. – Wow. Congrats Kris. Where’s Al Michaels? (Sweet trophy!) I guess they threw Adam a bone tonight with the performances (Kiss AND Queen?!?) because he’d play second fiddle in the end. I think Adam will land on his feet.
It was a pretty good season but I think Adam peaked too early. Sure, Kris now has the title of “American Idol” but does this even matter anymore? Hasn’t Adam already won too? I mean think about this—it’s easier than ever to record and put out your own album, yet the music business is dying. American Idol gives you amazing exposure and a ready-made fan base but as we’ve seen, it’s nearly impossible to sustain buzz once the show goes off the air. I guarantee at least seven of the top ten singers on the show will put out records in the next year and a half and isn’t that the ultimate goal? Become a star, record albums and tour the globe for your career? The problem is that fans loved these singers on the show when they were singing recognizable pop songs. As soon as Danny or Kris or Matt or Allison record songs written for them by professional songwriters and try to sell those songs on a solo album, the well will run dry. Music executives still think the Idol model can sell records but if people aren’t buying records from U2, Green Day and 50 Cent, why are they going to buy a CD from Scott MacIntyre? Adam has the chops to rock with a band, but I just don’t see a niche for him on pop radio as a solo artist.
American Idol is a great television show but ask Taylor Hicks, David Cook, Fantasia and Ruben Studdard how their careers are going. Hope you enjoyed the season (and maybe the upcoming tour) because the only time you’ll hear from these singers again is on the obligatory Idol appearance on next year’s results shows.
