Lobster and corn fritters. Go to Keon’s Bistro in Haverhill, Massachusetts and order them now. Light, crisp, airy and rich drizzled with honey for a balanced sweetness. The best appetizer I’ve eaten all year.
The rest of the menus is equally diesel. Start out with some of their great bread and basil chick pea spread. Local seafood and hearty proteins are featured on the classic American menu. The veal osso bucco or “Three Brothers”–shrimp, chicken and beef over creamy mashed potatoes–are easy choices for entrees. The food is simple yet elevated and refined. Right now they’re offering a great deal; two entrees and a bottle of wine for $60. Please tell me if you know of a better offer.
The atmosphere in the tiny room is intimate but not too cramped. Booths and high tables line the exterior with a large bar as the focal point. Service is excellent with servers being charming and attentive without being annoying. Keon himself was actually there working the front of the house and even helped out a stranded dog in a car outside on the corner with a bowl of water.
Keon’s is the embodiment of a complete restaurant–a vision, excellent food and front end execution. Go for the fritters, stay for everything else.
