I was thinking of doing another March Madness type tournament again this year with my favorite pop-punk songs, but what’s the point? I’m pretty sure I already know the winner.
Ah, Cartel. You may remember them from the career-killing “Band in a Bubble” show on MTV a few years back. Cartel were easily the biggest one-hit-wonder band to emerge from the mid-2000’s pop-punk boom, but damn, what a hit is is. “Honestly” has a killer progression, enough of a lead to keep it interesting, and the prerequisite whiny lyrics about relationships. The chorus is melodic gold and the balance of pop sheen and heavy sack is diesel. The production is great (perfect snare), and I’m a sucker for a half-time ending. I’m sure the band is still out there, but it’s hard when your first single is the best song you’ll ever write. Plus I heard they were dicks on Warped Tour after this song first hit. Losers.
